To expand on Frederik's response.

You cannot change from 32 chip to 64 bit Windows without doing a clean install.

You can obviously fill-in your data from C and then put it back one time the install is done, only you will have to reinstall all your applications.

You will have to exercise a make clean installation, there is no in place upgrade path from Windows 7 32 Bit to 64 chip.

Using the Windows 7 64 bit deejay, install the Windows 7 Windows Easy Transfer Utility from the DVD (To find information technology, just navigate to x:\support\migwiz, '10:' represents the name of your disk bulldoze. In this binder, y'all will see a drove of files, the important one you need to expect for and double click is 'migsetup'.) , run it and create a Wet file (Windows Easy Transfer file), if you have an external hard disk, y'all can have it stored there so you can access it later when you do a make clean install of Windows vii 64 scrap deejay.

Once you have done that, simply practise a clean install of Windows 7 64 fleck disk. In Windows seven 64 bit deejay, launch Windows Easy Transfer, follow the on screen wizard, signal to where you stored the the WET file (external hard disk), and it will restore your personal files and settings. Reinstall any necessary applications.

Some other option is to perform a custom install, see the Windows 7 section of the post-obit article. This will archive your Windows 7 32 scrap installation, you can recover your file from Windows.erstwhile. But, you lot will have to reinstall all applications and drivers.

How to: Perform a custom installation of Windows

Windows seven 64 bit comes in handy when y'all need to address at least 4 GBs or more of RAM. Windows 7 32 scrap can utilize up to 3.2 GBs of RAM. Because the retention address infinite is much larger for 64 flake Windows, that means, y'all need twice as much memory than 32 chip Windows to accomplish some of the same task, just you are able to do so much more, you can have more applications open, exercise things similar run an Antivirus scan in the background without it affecting your system performance. Windows 7 64 flake is more secure too, malicious code cannot easily infiltrate information technology, drivers are more reliable since they must exist signed before they tin can piece of work with 64 chip Windows 7.

Equally for compatibility, yous will need 64 chip device drivers for any hardware devices you might have. Also, there is no 16 fleck subsystem in Windows vii 64 fleck, which means, your applications must exist 32 bit only, not 16 bit installer or uninstallers.

No you can not. At that place is no way to change the "bitness" of *any* version of Windows from 32-bit to 64-fleck, or vice versa.

The only way to get there is by doing a clean installation.
