Ideas For Decorating Gifts With Christmas Ribbon
One of my very favorite ways to decorate for Christmas is using ribbon in a variety of ways! Learn 7+ tips & tricks to add Christmas ribbon to your holiday decor this year!
I'm sharing some of my favorite ways to use ribbon today with you. And I keep mine forever because you never know when a color might come back in popularity, or you might want to change things up. It's just so much fun to have a stash of Christmas ribbon. So, my recommendation is to get it, keep it, and use it every year!
1. Ornaments hung with Velvet Ribbon
I love using a thin velvet ribbon from Michael's, Etsy or Amazon.
My favorite ribbon to use:
- 3/8 inch velvet ribbon

This is a new way of using ribbon in my Christmas decor this year, but it's so much fun to hang ornaments from your chandeliers. Am I right? This is a thin velvet ribbon that works perfectly in this application.
It would be pretty to hang ornaments from ANYWHERE with velvet ribbon, don't you think?
2. Add Ribbon to Garlands
It's so fun to add a pop of color or another element of interest to your garlands with ribbon.
My favorite ribbon to use:

I will either tie a simple bow like I did on my mantel garland and leave the tails long and flowy. Or, I will use a wired ribbon to make a larger bow and kind of leave the tails long and curled like I did on my stair banister.

3. Christmas Tree Ribbon
Classic ribbon, right? Of course ribbon goes on a Christmas tree! I actually know people who don't put ribbon on their trees – and while I believe in "you do you" – I LOVE a ribbon on a tree.
My favorite ribbon to use:
- Always a wired ribbon unless you're tying satin ribbon and putting it on branches
- 2 1/2 inch or wider wired ribbon
I find my ribbon at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Amazon and Etsy.

I've shared more about how I assemble my Christmas tree decorations (including how I cascade the ribbon through the tree) in this post. It's just my favorite way to add a whole new level of interest to my Christmas tree.
Obviously some of my favorites to use are plaid ribbons, buffalo check and solid velvet ribbon. But I also like to use sparkly gold ribbon and red and white ribbon if I'm going for a more traditional look.
One quick tip I have about putting ribbon on your Christmas tree – don't be afraid to cut your roll of ribbon! I love to cut my ribbon in 2-3 foot lengths and weave it through the branches in small sections. Don't be afraid to cut it up!
4. Use Ribbon to Hang Wreaths from Cabinets
It's become a tradition of mine to hang a piece of ribbon with a small wreath on the cabinet doors in my kitchen. I'm in LOVE with the look year after year.
You can use most any ribbon you have for this project!
My favorite ribbon to use:
- 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 inch ribbon of any kind!

- Any ribbon you have!
This is a great place to use any and all of your favorite ribbons! I love to find ribbon at any of my favorite stores, like Amazon, Etsy, Michaels, Target or Hobby Lobby, for this method of decorating.
So, you'll find that I use a variety of ribbon, gift tags and embellishments on my gift packages. I really like to use all different ribbons and one day I'll do a post with just my wrapping ideas. But for now, I'll show you some of the ways I've wrapped gifts in the past!
As far as embellishments go, I will use any leftover ornaments I've bought that year. Or sometimes I will go out and buy flat ornaments specifically for adorning gifts. I love adding those simple wreaths (as seen below) as well!
After holiday sales are a great time to grab embellishments for gifts on the cheap for next year!
